Finding and Creating Belonging at UC San Diego | ERC Room

William Songer | Senior New Student Programs Specialist | ERC Student Affairs Office

The transition into university can be an overwhelming process at times, even after a year or more at the institution, and it can be difficult to find community on a campus as large as UCSD. To build community, students often seek connections with those they feel akin to. However, UCSD is a place where the campus’s diversity and size is a strength, and community can be found in unexpected places. Our session will encourage students to reflect on their identity and place on campus in order to push the boundaries of their leadership. They will participate in a guided self-reflection activity to learn more about their identities as well as the identities of their peers. Students will be asked to reflect on times they felt like they belonged, times that they felt alienated, and times that they were able to build community among unexpected groups. These reflections will help student leaders recognize the power they hold to create community. Student leadership can look very different across UCSD, but we all have the ability to create community building spaces for our students, no matter what that community looks like.
